File format incompatibilities happen every day. If you work with a high volume of other people's documents, it's almost inevitable you'll run into file format woes. And what happens when you spend hours crafting a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation only to discover that the person whom you sent it to doesn't have PowerPoint?
To combat these problems, Microsoft has a number of converters and viewers at its disposal. Converters let certain Office applications convert files from third-party programs to usable Office documents, and viewers let others view and, in some cases, print and email Office documents even if they don't have access to the program you used to create the original.
