Wireless Network Security
If you’ve decided to beef up your wireless LAN’s security by enabling encryption, or typing in a longer, stronger key (also called a passphrase) for the encryption you have, here’s a tip. When you enter your router’s settings to make the changes—usually through a browser pointed at a specific IP address, such as http://198.162.0.1—don’t try to alter them over a wireless connection.
That connection will drop as soon as you change the encryption settings, which could leave your router or laptop hanging, at least temporarily. Use a wired connection to make sure that the settings “take” and the router administration settings are exited properly. For example, run an Ethernet cable between your notebook and the router until you’re through.
