Mother Nature's strange style

Kalanit (plural – Kalaniyoth) is Anemone in English and Anemone coronaria L. in Botanics. It is a famous flower that is typical to the Israeli winter and early spring. It comes in various colors like red, blue, white and variations. In the late 1940s, Jews nicknamed the British paratroopers stationed in Israel Kalaniyoth after their red berets, and even a very popular song was written then (well-known after sung by the famous singer Shoshana Damari).

The flower is covering most of Israel and even the Judea Desert and the Negev although the southern types are only red while the northern ones are colorful.

A famous Kalaniyoth field is off the Megiddo airstrip in the western Yezreel Valley. Out of there YC sent me those fantastic photos of a strange dual-colored Anemone which is quite unique since the flowers are of one color only. The photos were taken in late January by the biologist Joseph Meiri

Is Mother Nature confused?

Biologists call it chimera - a single plant organism with genetically distinct cells from two different zygotes or from a mixed-species callus
