Jail for mother over child-abuse horror - Child Abuse


A woman who brutally abused her four-year-old daughter while showering affection on the girl's twin brother has been sentenced to four years and eight months in jail.



The girl, Lo Fung-ying, died in July 2007 after choking on a piece of bread, but an autopsy turned up 59 injuries - some dating back two years - on her body.

In passing sentence on 29-year- old mainlander Zhang Huiyu, High Court Judge Darryl Saw said yesterday the girl had been subjected to physical abuse from the age of two and that the severity increased as she grew older.

But the level of abuse tapered off before visits by social workers carrying out a one-year, child-protection order, indicating Zhang could control herself.
