Christmas crackers - Christmas - Shopping - Sale

Hongkongers are shopping like crazy to snap up cut-price Christmas bargains as worried retailers go all out to keep the tills ringing.

A five-day sale at Japanese department store Yata in Sha Tin New Town Plaza attracted more than 140,000 people by last night. Prices were slashed by up to 80 percent. The first customer in the queue arrived at 6am, three hours before doors opened.

Takings jumped 25 percent from the same event last year. Japanese baby formula and bedding were the most popular items, with more than 3,600 cans of milk powder sold in the first two hours.

With Hong Kong already in recession, retailers are desperate to avoid a bleak festive season.
