From March 3, the initiative - the brainchild of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association - will be extended to outlets across the territory, according to chairwoman Caroline Mak Sui-king.
The scheme is currently operated only by major supermarket chains - and on Tuesdays only.
Mak denied the association is seeking to pre-empt today's Legislative Council session on the long-awaited plastic bag levy.
Cashiers will ask shoppers if they require plastic bags, but they will still have the option of making a donation for them in the 18 major companies involved.
