New project to tackle mental illness taboo - Schizophrenia - Mental illness - Robert Miller

Renowned neuroscientist and former psychotic patient Robert Miller's popular book is being translated into Chinese to help increase public acceptance of a "shameful illness."

First published in 2000, Straight Talking is an educational guide on mental illness and schizophrenia in New Zealand and Australia.

The Chinese version is being co-written by a team of University of Hong Kong psychologists under the newly launched Hong Kong Jockey Club Early Psychosis Project, which aims to set a model for mental health policy in the city.

The new Straight Talking book will contain stories of Hong Kong people who have recovered from the illness.

Miller estimates that 1 in 100 people may have experienced "florrid psychosis" - a condition when someone "loses touch with reality."
