Located on the far side of the Western district, Kennedy Town has spent years as a quiet, local neighborhood for families. In the past it was also an arrival point for many mainland immigrants, hence all the Chiu Chow-style soy braised goose restaurants in the area. However, with the arrival of the MTR in 2014, and increasing numbers of young, successful types moving in, watch out for rocketing rent prices and the opening of commercialized chain-store branches. Yet the area at present still retains its local neighborhood feel mixed with some cool locations, so check out these places for good food, unique shopping and a drink or two to round up your journey.

Lime
A place that (literally) stands out a mile among the dull landscape, Lime’s colorful interior is host to some of the best Thai food this side of the island. Recently opened, the restaurant specializes in serving authentic Thai street food for those who aren’t scared to try the “real stuff.” Customers have already lauded it as the best food they’ve tasted outside of Thailand, which is no exaggeration. Eschewing the boring old pad thai, menu highlights are the delicious Laab and Naamtok dishes, as well as whatever’s on the specials board. Owner and chef Joanne whips up many of her own creations, and we recommend you go for the fabulous grilled smoked duck breast naamtok, and the equally fabulous somtum green apple, somtum carrot and papaya salads. Cheuk Kee
You can’t really be in a neighborhood with Chiu Chow origins and not have congee, so it’s just as well that Cheuk Kee provides all our fluffy watery-rice needs. Situated on the corner of North Street and Belcher’s Street, the dai pai dong-style restaurant is a small, open-air place teeming with very local regulars. Their congee bowls are a brilliant cheap eat at around 15 bucks a bowl, with the usual toppings such as pork neck, beef and pig blood jelly. The sizzling smell of frying radish cake is another incentive to sit down for some traditional nosh. Corner of North St. and Belcher’s St. See map, number 2.
