Hong Kong Tourist Board hits back at 'expensive tag' - Hong Kong - travel

Following a report published this week which found Hong Kong to be the most expensive long-haul travel destination, the Hong Kong Tourist Board has hit back by highlighting the affordable options available to travellers.

“I am a little surprised at some of the costs quoted for Hong Kong as they do not match our figures, for instance a typical three-course meal for two adults including a bottle of house wine at Peking Garden ranges from HK$400-600 (£35-£53 using the Post office exchange rate on 12 September of 11.28 = £1) not £88.63 as quoted in the Post Office Survey,” said  Dawn Page, Director UK & Northern Europe of the Hong Kong Tourist Board.

(...) The Hong Kong Tourist Board has compiled a list of inexpensive or free things travellers to Hong Kong can do.  Among the list of free activities to try include: free Hong Kong Tourist Tai Chi classes; travelling on the Central Mid-Level escalator, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator climbing an impressive 135 metres; Chinese Tea Appreciation classes; and a stroll along the Avenue of Stars on Kowloon's waterfront.

Cheap tourist activities highlighted include:  travelling on the iconic Star Ferry, which costs £0.26 and the 100-year-old double decker Tramway, referred to as Ding Ding to the locals, which is an inexpensive way to explore the impressive Hong Kong cityscape.
