A player for Hong Kong's under-21 football team Friday pleaded guilty to offering bribes to his teammates to try to fix the result of a match against Russia, reversing his earlier plea.

The player, 20-year-old Iu Wai, was arrested after fellow players complained he had offered them bribes of 30,000 Hong Kong dollars (3,853 US dollars) each in return for losing a match on November 15.

Officers from Hong Kong's anti-graft agency the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) arrested the player after the players contacted them after refusing the bribe. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for the Russian under-21 team.

The Kowloon City Magistrate Court heard Iu offered the bribes after meeting a person in mainland China who suggested he fix a match in return for cash.

He was remanded in custody while the case was adjourned until December 30 to allow for reports to be prepared.
