Hillary Clinton: Iran's Straits of Hormuz threats 'provocative and dangerous'
Appearing at a joint news briefing with Qatar's Prime Minister, Ms Clinton said that the "provocative rhetoric" coming out of Iran in the last week has been "concerning".
"It has caused us and many of our partners in the region and around the world to reach out to the Iranians to impress upon them the provocative and dangerous nature of the threats to close the Straits of Hormuz," she said.
Tehran has threatened to choke the West's supply of Gulf oil if its exports are hit by sanctions, drawing a US warning that its navy was ready to open fire to prevent any blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which 35 per cent of the world's seaborne traded oil passes.
"It is also important to speak as clearly as we can to the Iranians about the dangers of this kind of provocation," she added.
