Suicide Bomber Kills 33 People in Pakistan Market
The attack happened in the Dera Ghazi Khan town of Punjab province, Pakistan’s most populous region.
The bomb destroyed the house of Zulfiqar Khosa, member of the Pakistan Muslim League-N party, which is in charge of the Punjab government but is the opposition party in the federal government. A number of other buildings were damaged, including a mosque and a bank.
The lawmaker was not at home during the time of the blast. His son, Dost Mohammad Khosa, said two of his cousins were injured on site. “It was a direct attack on us,” Associated Press quoted him as saying.
According to a BBC correspondent, Mr. Khosa recently chaired a religious leaders meeting that had labeled suicide-bombing as un-Islamic.
The people killed in the blast were those working at the street market or selling goods.
A state of emergency was declared in the city as rescuers tried to pull out people buried in debris.
