Though Apple Inc. itself did not show up at this week's Macworld, archenemy Microsoft was in abundant evidence. The Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit was showing off the next version of its productivity suite for the rival platform, Office for Mac 2011.

The show gave the software maker a chance to show more users more of the capabilities of the new suite. A lot of those centered on collaboration, with new co-authoring tools and Microsoft Office Web Apps integration.

"Together with your team—officemates, family or classmates—you are part of the community that helps shape each version of Office for Mac," said Eric Wilfrid, general manager at the Mac Business Unit at Microsoft. "You've told us that working together across platforms is a priority to you and that's why we are making Office for Mac 2011 the best, most compatible productivity suite on the Mac."

The Mac version will also be adorned with the controversial "ribbon" interface, but will still include the standard toolbar and Mac menu so as not to be a shock to users' systems.
