Alec Baldwin's daughter called police to their house after she became concerned about his behaviour. Alec Baldwin, the Hollywood star, spent a short spell in hospital after his daughter called police saying she was worried he might harm himself, police said.

Baldwin's spokesman later said there had been a "misunderstanding" between Baldwin and his 14-year-old daughter Ireland and he was quickly released from hospital by a doctor.

A New York City police official said Ireland had called the emergency services just after midnight from her father's Manhattan apartment.

Baldwin was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

The police official said: "She reported he made statements that made her worried that he might harm himself or take pills or something like that."

But Matthew Hiltzik, a spokesman for the actor, said: "This was a misunderstanding on one person's part. Alec was quickly released from the hospital, he's completely fine and is at work today."
