Beit Hanan was established in 1929 by immigrants from Bulgaria, which started buying land while still living in Bulgaria and later on they move and build up the village. Actually Beit Hanan was established twice – first part was during 1929 and in few years – in 1933 a new group of Bulgarian immigrants arrives and they are still now days called “the new population”. There are 71 farms in the village, we have accepted many more Bulgarian families which are now residents here. Currently Beit Hanan is in an expenditure stage and maybe we’ll build homes for our sons as many other villages did. In the past the main agriculture was stock-breeding and gardening. Today we continue breeding poultry and manufacturing eggs. Farming is not what it used to be – at the moment we are growing less avocado, pecan and olives. Bigger part of the population now days make its living by working outside the village.
In Beit Hanan are living about 120 families, estimated 500 people.
An interesting story: Many years ago in Beit Hanan we admitted young people, that ran out of Syria, as they were transferred across the border and their families remained in Syria. In our house along with me grew up a boy named Isaac and his sister, Freda, was raised up by another family in the village. When Isaac grew up he married a girl with Bulgarian origins. Freda also married a Bulgarian Jew by the family name Ashkenazi. Their son is Gaby Ashkenazy the current commander-in-chief of Israeli army. His brother is also serving the military and is brigadier-general.
