Democrats Differ on Proposed Amnesty - Thailand - Abhisit Vejjajiva - politics - Democrats - Chuan Leekpai

The Prime Minister insists he is ready to hear all viewpoints on the Constitutional amendments and possible amnesty for banned politicians after senior Democrats expressed opposition to the amnesty proposal.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjjaiva said he has not been pressured by coalition partners to amend the constitution and added that some key members of the Democrat party are opposing to granting amnesty to banned politicians.

Former prime minister Chuan Leekpai , a chief adviser to the Democrat Party, and former Democrat leader Banyat Batthhathan recently expressed opposition to amnesty for banned politicians.

The Prime Minister said the Charter amendments will be based on mutual resolution, and he insisted the push for amnesty is not influenced by the concern over the possible disbandment of the Democrat Party

Meanwhile, Chuan insisted he has no conflict with Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thausuban over the effort to seek amnesty for banned politicians, saying the party has never discussed the matter.
