Little hope for Thailand's fighters - Thailand - Sports - Boxing - IOC

Thailand will gain nothing from the inclusion of women's boxing in the 2012 Olympics, the Thai amateur boxing boss said yesterday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Thursday that women's boxing will make its first Olympic appearance at the London Games.

There will be three weight classes for women - flyweight (51kg), lightweight (60kg) and middleweight (75kg). The current 11 men's events will be cut to 10 with the light-flyweight (48kg) division facing the axe.

"Dropping the men's light-flyweight division will surely reduce our medal chances," said Gen Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (Abat).

"This is bad for all Asian countries because we do well in lower divisions."
