"We condemn the violence and we call on leaders of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship to do the same," said State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.
"We also call on the Thai security forces to show restraint going forward," Mr Crowley said.
The U.S. State Department called on all sides to resolve differences in a way that strengthens democracy and the rule of law.
"The United States firmly believes that both sides can and should work out disagreements peacefully through earnest negotiation," Mr Crowley said.
"Violence is not an acceptable means of resolving political differences," he said.
