US university introduces electronic monitoring of student attendance

Student swipe cards - necessary documentation or Orwellian surveillance?

Would students benefit from a bit more encouragement to get up in the morning for lectures? Academics in the US are debating a decision by Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff to introduce a monitoring system to check when students attend, or miss, class. Sensors will detect students' identification cards when they enter the lecture theatres. If they don't turn up often enough, they could find it reflected in their grades.

A controversial proposal has students horrified at a Bergen County middle school on Wednesday. The principal is asking parents to join a voluntary ban on social networking.	She came to visit Metro East schools as part of an exchange program, but Thai educator Areerat Wattanathongpiew was able to take in some local culture during her 15-day stay in the U.S. - such as a 20-inning game between the Cardinals and New York Mets.

The number of students applying to take central university admissions exam in Thailand this year has dropped by about 20,000 comparing to last year's applications.	Lower Merion School District employees activated the web cameras and tracking software on laptops they gave to high school students about 80 times in the past two school years, snapping nearly 56,000 images that included photos of students, pictures inside their homes and copies of the programs or files running on their screens, district investigators have concluded.

Campers write about their experiences - The first of Asian University’s two annual Summer Camps is under way with nearly seventy youngsters improving their English and having fun. Last weekend the students went to Jomtien Beach and two of the students (Peem Shaowanasai and Phatt Wongsathuaythong) have written the following about their trip.	A female student at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee was detained last Monday after throwing a waterbottle at another student, threatening the class and the professor, and resisting arrest by campus police.
