Coming immediately on the tails of the red carpet of the Thai film industry's Suphannahong Awards ceremony, and knocking the wind out of the sails of the young starlets whose only access to the front page of Thai dailies was by donning barely-there outfits, was the surprise announcement of the retirement of Bangkok's legendary hotelier, Kurt Wachtveitl, at the age of 72, after 41 years at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

MR Chatumongol Sonakul is a former governor of the central bank from 1998 to May 2001.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the appointment of MR Chatumongol Sonakul as the board chairman of the Bank of Thailand (BoT), deputy government spokesman Puttipong Punnakan said.
