The program is the culmination of an effort launched by Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle) in 2007 to hold beer and wine tastings at neighborhood grocery stores (more on the bill here). Senate Bill 5751 passed during the 2008 legislative session and was signed into law by Gov. Gregoire in April.

The West Seattle Thriftway at 4201 SW Morgan St. has already been tentatively selected, pending eligibility checks, as one of 15 independently owned stores in the program, set to start Oct. 1. The other 15 stores are chain stores, including Safeways and Fred Meyers. The West Seattle Thriftway is the only Seattle store on the board's short list.
