Founding owner Jane Hedreen also has hung a sign in Flora and Henri's Manhattan store, hoping to sublease the space and redirect customers to its Web site.

Hedreen, a mother of three children between the ages of 8 and 17, said she's figuring out new ways to run Flora and Henri after a decade in business. Increasingly, she's focused on the company's Web site, which was upgraded last year to make recommendations on how shoppers can complete an outfit by showing several products to go with their purchases.
"It's getting harder and harder to survive as a small business," Hedreen said. "The Excel spreadsheet tells us it can't be done, but we continue to reinvent. You have to be nimble, yeah."
