An ambulance was called to the scene and arrived in the northbound lanes. That accident caused only minor injuries, Pratt said, but southbound traffic was backed up during the morning's commute more than six miles, to Lynnwood.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the ambulance pulled over as far left in the HOV lane as it could but was still partially blocking it.
The ambulance was on scene for about 15 minutes when a motorcycle hit the back of it at a high speed.
The motorcycle's rider suffered potentially fatal injuries when he struck the back of the ambulance, which had stopped in the Northbound carpool lane to help with the first accident, Washington State Trooper Cliff Pratt said.
