Eight time champions Thailand will open their SEA Games defence against Vietnam in Vientiane on December 2.

Thailand have been drawn in Group A along with Cambodia, Malaysia, Timor Leste and Vietnam. Laos head Group B along with Burma, Indonesia and Singapore.

The opening match will take place at the Laos National Stadium.

Steve Darby, Thailand SEA Games head coach, said he was confident his team would perform well at the Games.

"I have selected the team myself," he said. "I know Thai people take the SEA games seriously and we have a good squad."

Thailand SEA Games manager Samart Maluleem said he believes Vietnam could be the biggest threat to the Thai team, but he is confident Thailand will win their ninth football gold medal.
