Diamonds for record-breaking Hong Kong athletes - Asian Games - Sports - Hong Kong

Athletes from Hong Kong will receive a diamond worth 100,000 yuan ($14,770) if they break a world record at the Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou, China in November this year.

Breaking an Asian record would earn the athletes a diamond worth 50,000 yuan, the Shanghai Daily reported.

At the last Asian Games held in Doha four years ago, the only world records set were in weight-lifting and shooting.

Fang Daer, director of marketing for the organising committee, said that although dwarfed by the 20.5 billion yuan made by the marketing campaign for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Guangzhou's revenue from its corporate partners was quite healthy.

The media has estimated that the final bill could come to more than 30 billion yuan.
