US President's older daughter Malia will turn 11 as nation celebrates 4th of July - USA - Malia Obama - Barack Obama - politics

Malia Obama this weekend will be the first member of this First Family to celebrate a birthday in the White House as several thousand descend on her lawn to watch fireworks on July 4 when she turns 11.

President Barack Obama revealed Thursday that the celebration started early, with an invasion of about 20 girls to the Camp David presidential retreat in the mountains of western Maryland.

"There are 24 double-X chromosomes up in Camp David as we speak," Obama said. "It's a little intimidating."

The First Family will return from Camp David and the birthday party on Saturday to host a South Lawn barbecue for 1,200 military families. The U.S. Marine Band will be on hand to play throughout the day, and President Obama plans to address the attendees. The annual fireworks display on the National Mall will culminate the evening.

An aide declined to provide additional details about plans for Malia's birthday celebration, although acknowledged it is possible the band might play "Happy Birthday."
This weekend's celebration will be the first birthday Malia has not spent in a hotel room since at least 2006. It will also be the family's first birthday with full access to the ushers, pastry chefs and other perks provided by the White House.
